    What this service is

A clear scope for industrial scaffolding in Essex

Industrial scaffolding is the work we do for manufacturing, distribution, energy, water and process industries. Different from commercial scaffolding because the loads are heavier, the geometry is rarely straightforward, and the access is constrained by live plant, permit-to-work systems and shutdown windows that can't slip.

Typical industrial work includes scaffolds around process tanks and silos for cleaning, lining or NDT inspection; tied access scaffolds to warehouse roofs and cladding; suspended decks beneath conveyors and pipe bridges; confined-space access for tank-internal works; and shutdown scaffolds erected and struck inside narrow plant downtime windows.

Almost all industrial work falls outside TG20 and is engineered bespoke. Loading classes are verified against the trade above (NDT inspectors are light, blast-and-paint crews are heavy, brick-lining crews are very heavy). Designs are stamped where the contract or insurer requires it.

What goes wrong when it's rushed

What goes wrong when industrial scaffolding is rushed

Industrial scaffold failures usually come from one of two sources: the design didn't account for the actual load above it, or the erection was rushed against a shutdown window. Both are avoidable with the right contractor — but both are common when the wrong contractor wins the job.

    • Light-duty deck specified for a heavy-duty trade — risk of board failure under tools or material storage.
    • Tie pattern designed for an aesthetic façade, not for an industrial cladding wall — pull-out under wind load.
    • Confined-space scaffold built without permit-integrated access controls — site H&S stops the job.
    • Shutdown scaffolds rushed without a written erection / dismantle programme — overruns into production restart.
    • No structural sign-off on engineered designs — insurer or principal contractor refuses the design pack.

    How we deliver this service

    Our industrial scaffolding process

Heavy-duty multi-deck industrial scaffold around process equipment in a UK plant
    1. 01

      Brief & site walk

We attend with your project engineer or H&S contact, walk the site, identify constraints — permit systems, live plant, shutdown windows.

    2. 02

      Engineered design

Bespoke design with loading class, tie pattern, deck spec and access route. Engineer's stamp where contract requires.

    3. 03

      RAMS & permits

Site-specific RAMS, integration with your permit-to-work system, and a written erection / dismantle programme.

    4. 04

      Erection in window

Erected within agreed shutdown or out-of-hours window. Daily progress reporting against programme.

    5. 05

      Inspect, alter, strike

Statutory inspections logged. Alterations within design intent on call. Strike to programme with handover pack.

    What you actually get

The benefits of using Spartan for industrial scaffolding

    Engineered to actual load

Loading class verified against the trade above — light, general, heavy or special duty as the work demands.

    Permit-to-work integrated

Access controls and lock-out/tag-out integrated into your existing permit system, not bolted on as an afterthought.

    Shutdown reliability

Programmes built to be deliverable inside narrow shutdown windows — we don't promise dates we can't keep.

    Confined-space capability

Trained crews and rescue plans for tank, silo and confined-space scaffolds. Atmospheric monitoring coordinated with your H&S team.

    Sub-contract or principal

Comfortable as a sub-contractor under a main contractor or as a direct supplier to plant operators.

    Insurer-acceptable docs

Designs, RAMS, inspection logs and handover packs in the format insurers and HSE-aware principal contractors accept.

    In detail

What makes industrial scaffolding a different discipline

Industrial scaffolding is structurally and procedurally different from any other category. The loads above the deck are heavier, the surfaces being tied to are rarely conventional masonry, and the access is constrained by systems (permit-to-work, lock-out/tag-out, shutdown windows) that don't exist in commercial or residential work.

The biggest single difference is that almost every industrial scaffold is bespoke-designed. TG20 covers a useful subset of standard tube-and-fitting geometries — almost none of which match a tank, silo, conveyor or suspended deck application. So the engineered design becomes the centre of the project, not an afterthought.

    Loading classes (BS EN 12811)

Class 1 (75 kg/m²) for inspection, Class 2 (150) for light masonry, Class 3 (200) for general, Class 4 (300) for heavy, Class 5 (450) for very heavy and Class 6 (600) for special. Mis-classification is a common third-party audit finding — we get it right at design.

    Suspended & cantilever decks

Beneath pipe bridges, conveyors and overhead structures where ground-supported scaffolding isn't possible. Engineered with calculated cantilever capacity and tie-in design.

    Confined-space access

Tank, silo and vessel scaffolds with controlled access points, atmospheric monitoring integration and rescue planning. Crews trained for confined-space entry.

    Shutdown discipline

Programmes built around your shutdown window with daily progress reporting. We've never overrun a planned shutdown — every plant client we've worked with knows that's the only metric that matters.
