What this service is
Chimney scaffolding gives a brickie, roofer or sweep a safe, full-working platform around a chimney stack — not just a foothold. We supply chimney drop scaffolds (a localised drop from a perimeter scaffold) and stand-alone chimney platforms tied to the roof structure for jobs where a full perimeter isn't justified.
Most jobs we get called on are stack rebuilds (loose brickwork above the flaunching, leaning stacks, weather-damaged corbels), pot and cowl replacement, lead flashing renewal, liner installs and full chimney removals. Sweeps occasionally book us where roof access alone isn't safe to work from.
Every chimney scaffold goes up with tile-edge crawl boards, integrated roof ladders and proper boarding around the stack — your brickie should be working at waist height, not bent over with one foot on a tile.

What goes wrong when it's rushed
Half the chimney scaffolds we get called to alter or replace are too small for the work. A 600mm gap around the stack might be enough to inspect — it's not enough to rebuild. Spend the right money on the scaffold and the trade above doesn't add days to the job.
How we deliver this service

We attend, look at the roof from inside and outside, check tile type, pitch, ridge condition and the stack itself.
Written quote with platform size, tile protection spec and access route. Half-day to one-day quote turnaround.
Most chimney scaffolds are up in half a day. Crawl boards across tiles, roof ladders fixed, full perimeter handrails.
Handover certificate signed, scaftag fitted, brickie or roofer briefed on safe access route.
Strike inside 48 hours of the trade's sign-off. Tiles inspected for slipped or broken units before we leave.
What you actually get
Boarded all the way around the stack at waist height — your brickie can actually lay bricks, not just touch them.
Crawl boards over tiles as standard. Tiles inspected at strike — broken units replaced or flagged in writing.
Hooked to the ridge, secured to the scaffold. Sweeps and inspectors don't free-climb.
Drop protection so falling brick or mortar doesn't damage tiles or guttering below the stack.
Most domestic chimney scaffolds are surveyed, quoted and erected within a working week.
From one week — no minimum-month penalty for a fast chimney repair.
In detail
Chimney scaffolds sit at the highest point of a building and apply load through tiles to a structure that wasn't designed for it. They need a different design approach to a wall scaffold — closer attention to ties, weight distribution across the roof, and how the scaffold is dismantled without damaging tiles that have been worked around for weeks.
We work to TG20:21 where the geometry allows and to bespoke design where it doesn't, supported by NASC SG4 dismantle guidance. Most domestic chimney drops fall inside TG20 with the right boarding and tie configuration; large stacks, multi-stack roofs and listed-building work usually need a bespoke design.
A localised lift from an existing perimeter scaffold up to and around the stack. Most cost-effective when the scope already justifies a full scaffold.
Roof-tied scaffold for stack-only works where a full perimeter would be over-spec. Faster to erect, cheaper, and lower disruption.
Crawl boards laid over batten lines wherever possible to spread load. Polythene under boards on heritage tile to avoid scuffing.
For tall rebuilds we add a debris chute and tarpaulin sheet to contain dust, mortar and dropped brick — keeps gardens, conservatories and cars clean.
