The result is poor productivity, safety concerns and arguments over who pays for the alteration. In detail ## Designing access scaffolds around the trade above Access scaffolding is one of the easiest things to under-spec, because the brief from the building owner often only covers length and storey count. The detail — board widths, lift heights, edge protection, material storage — needs to come from the trade who's actually going to work from it. Painters want one or two-board lifts at chest height, renderers want two-board lifts with mortar-bucket clearance, window installers want bay-specific scaffolds with material storage at sill height, and surveyors want quick safe access without scope creep. ### Lift heights by trade Painters: 1.7–1.9m below the work face. Renderers: 1.4–1.6m. Window installers: aligned to sill height. Inspectors / surveyors: comfortable standing height with a clear sight line to the work. ### Board widths Standard 2-board (450mm) for most trades. 3-board (650mm) for renderers and any trade storing materials at the lift. 4-board where double-handed material handling is needed. ### Edge protection Guardrail, intermediate rail and toeboard as standard.
